My dog found this creature in my hallway and proceeded to follow it around as it crawled about.
I think it looks like a mutant albino moth. After documenting my discovery I released the creature outside.

You are correct:

Although many people think that octopi is the “smart” was of saying “octopuses,” they are actually wrong. The “smart” way is actually octopodes. (But who says that?)

But because “octopi” is so widely used, it is accepted as a plural of “octopus.” Not many…

I get kinda angry and explain this exact thing when people ‘correct’ me for saying Octopuses. I really like octopuses and cephalopods in general and talk about them frequently enough and there is ALWAYS someone who tells me in a superior-matter-of-fact-I’m-smarter tone, “Actually it’s octopi, not octopuses.”, so I tell them  ”No. Octopus isn’t like cactus. It’s greek. Just because someone once corrected you when you said cactuses doesn’t mean the rule translates to every single word that ends in ‘us’, if you want to nitpick it’s octopodes (which makes you sound ridiculous), stop trying to make yourself sound smart, you just sound ignorant.” Except usually I’m nicer about it. I don’t mind being corrected when I am wrong, but I hate to be corrected in that tone by ignorant people when I am already correct and they are wrong. It’s mostly the tone, though. Did I say kinda angry? I meant really angry. I didn’t mean to rant. IT IS A TOUCHY TOPIC FOR ME! People correcting me when I say “octopuses” is a pet peeve.
